Dovetail Electric Aviation is pioneering the transition to sustainable regional aviation by converting legacy aircraft into fully electric, zero-emission platforms. In their Open Day event, Dovetail showcased the first public demonstration of a hydrogen-based hybrid electric propulsion system. Industry leaders and strategic partners witnessed a live test of a fully integrated drivetrain including a motor, inverter, battery pack, and hydrogen fuel cell.

To ensure a safe, controlled, and accurate test environment, Cinergia’s B2C+ regenerative DC power supply was deployed. It enabled high-voltage, regenerative, real-world emulation of the energy flows within the aircraft’s power system—supporting the complete integration and validation of the propulsion system on the ground before implementation in flight.

The Challenge: Safely Energizing Electric Flight

Designing and validating a 100% electric propulsion system for aviation requires rigorous ground testing that mirrors real flight conditions. This includes integrating various complex components—motor, inverter, battery, hydrogen cell—all needing precise coordination and power management, without compromising safety.

The Solution: CINERGIA B2C+ Bidirectional Power Supply

Cinergia’s bidirectional DC converters are designed for energy-intensive testing applications such as electric vehicle systems, battery simulation, and renewable energy emulation. In this case, the B2C+ allowed:

  • Operate at up to 800VDC

  • Deliver 160kW continuous (240kW peak)

  • Support fully regenerative energy flow

  • Offer high ramp precision and dynamic control

These capabilities made it the ideal tool to energize the system, test under controlled power cycles, and simulate real flight operation phases with full energy recovery.

Integration & Validation

The B2C+ was seamlessly connected to the test bench replicating the aircraft's onboard environment. Key test stages included:

  • Simulating take-off and steady-state flight profiles

  • Testing the motor-inverter response under dynamic load

  • Emulating hybrid battery + hydrogen operation

  • Executing charge/discharge cycles of isolated battery packs

The demonstration successfully powered the propeller, reaching thrust levels equivalent to those in take-off conditions. This marked a major milestone in validating Dovetail’s electric drivetrain and provided public and institutional affirmation of its feasibility.
